ELIMINATE HEAT & DIRT-RELATED DOWNTIME AND KEEP SENSITIVE CONTROLS 6/3/2002
There are many mechanisms and forces that affect the reliability
of electronics. Reasons for control failure are often difficult
to pinpoint. Heat, dirt and moisture are usually the most deadly
hazards that industrial control systems face. Cabinet fans
(still widely used for cooling) pull hot, dirty air from the
room into the cabinet that you're trying to cool down!
The wide variety of materials, fabrication and mounting techniques that are used to manufacture electronic components add to the problem of accurately estimating power dissipation (heat gain) in compact, confined enclosures.
To properly evaluate the amount of cooling that a cabinet will need, please determine:
- The cabinet temperature
- The room temperature
- The highest room temperature possible
- The desired cabinet temperature
- Physical cabinet size (width, height & depth)
