Precision Sharpening Machines Add Vortec Option   10/1/2001

Two popular Vortec products — the Adjustable Cold Air Gun and the Round Transvector — have proven ideal cooling and cleaning solutions for Cuoghi Affilatrici of Modena, Italy, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of precision machine tool sharpeners.

Cuoghi, which was seeking an effective alternative to its standard water-cooled system for cooling the drill and tap sharpening process on its machine as well as an effective way to evacuate metal shavings from the work area, turned to Vortec for the answers. Now the Cuoghi line of drill sharpening machines is offered with an optional pneumatic system that uses an internally-mounted Vortec Model #610 Adjustable Cold Air Gun, which is ducted to the work area.

The vortex tube-based Cold Air Gun provides a steady stream of chilled air to cool the cutting/grinding process, thus extending machining speeds and prolonging tool life. With no moving parts, the vortex tube spins filtered, compressed air into separate hot and cold air streams and generates temperatures as low as -40° F. It can also eliminate the need for mist coolants and secondary parts cleaning. In addition, Cuoghi uses the supplied compressed air to power an Vortec Model #902 Round Transvector, a round airflow amplifier that forces compressed air out of a .002" circular gap to accelerate the air. As the fast-moving air collides with surrounding air, it entrains a large volume of ambient air to increase total output. The substantial air amplification of the ducted Round Transvector provides a powerful vacuum to remove scrap and shavings from the work area during the machining process. The Transvector conveys the scrap to a containment receptacle for direct recycling or disposal.

Cuoghi expects that demand among customers will be high for the Vortec-driven cold air/pneumatic system as an alternative to the standard water-cooling system on its sharpening machines.
